Furniture Jobs
The Furniture Industry
The UK furniture manufacturing industry employs 71,000 people within 6,205 companies, and accounts for £7.073 billion of the country’s GDP – almost 2% of its entire manufacturing output. On top of this, the sector also comprises 18,800 self-employed people and 25,000 interior designers, who generate an estimated £2billion every year.
The furniture market is broad and varied, and can be divided into three sub sectors: the domestic, contract, and office markets. However, companies are increasingly diversifying into different markets so the lines of distinction have become blurred – particularly in the office and contract sub sectors. Around 70% of furniture manufacturing turnover in the UK can be attributed to the domestic sub sector.
Working in the Furniture Industry
SMEs and micro businesses make up the majority of the furniture sector, with 83% of companies turning over less than £1million a year. Only 290 companies boast turnovers of over £5million. In terms of employment within the industry, nearly 80% of companies have fewer than ten members of staff. Of all the businesses in the sector, just 35 companies have a workforce of over 250.
The industry does not have a defined regional hub; work is undertaken across the entire length and breadth of Britain – ideal for furniture sector jobseekers in all areas of the UK.
